About this guide
Weird Chinese Food is a companion site to Aqiang Eats China, a YouTube channel that films street food, night markets and local markets across China, including Kunming in Yunnan, Chengdu in Sichuan and Zhuhai in Guangdong.
How we research
- Every factual statement on a food page is marked with a numbered link to a source listed under “Sources”. We use encyclopedia articles, published research and established local and food media, and we read each source before citing it.
- “[our video]” marks things we saw ourselves in our own footage, such as a price tag or a market stall.
- We only quote a price when we have verified it. At the moment the only one we have verified is spicy rabbit head at ¥12.50 per head, from a price tag we filmed at Fuqin night market in Chengdu. Some pages also mention a price published by a cited source.
- If we could not find a reliable source for something, we leave it out instead of guessing.
- Health and medicinal beliefs are described as beliefs, not as proven benefits.
Safety
This site is not medical advice. If you have food allergies, especially to shellfish, be very careful with insects, because they share allergens with shrimp and crab. In Yunnan, eat wild mushrooms only when they are cooked by experienced restaurants.
Photos and video
Where available, photos are stills from our own channel footage; pages without our own photos show an icon instead. Videos are embedded from our YouTube channel.
